Hot Sauce: Marie Sharp’s Smoked Habanero
“As an aroma pleasing to the LORD, offer a burnt offering.” Numbers 29:2a
Two years ago, I found myself in the seaside town of Hopkins, Belize. Little did I know that I would begin a love affair that is still going strong. The community is home to the Garifuna people, and their cuisine represents classic Caribbean fare with unique African twists. Hot sauces are quite common, and the local Belizean favorite is Marie Sharp’s, made in nearby Stann Creek (Company Website).
Let me simply say this, this company makes some of the most delicious hot sauces on the planet.
If you are looking for hot sauce with real flavor, rooted a sweet carrot and onion base, look no further. While I will review some other varieties later, their Smoked Habanero is their best product “hands down.” My family of seven kids, with a varying range of heat tolerance, has labeled this sauce their all-time favorite. That’s a pretty big feat.
With a sharp bite on the front of your tongue, a slow building heat in the back of your mouth, this sauce has a sweet non-vinegary profile. It takes advantage of the traditional Caribbean carrot sauces while tapping into the Mayan tradition of smoking peppers. Unlike some smoked products, there is no kerosene aftertaste. When served over eggs, it transports you to a beachside fire with friends. Mixed with mayonnaise and served over burgers, the game is next leveled. Your mouth will never forget it being drizzled across Belizean “garnaches” (a hard flat fried corn tortilla with refried beans and topped with cheese and a lime drizzled mix of cabbage, green onions and cilantro). This thick sauce has one disappointing feature - you find yourself rationing every drop, not wanting the bottle run out during your meal.
If you wish to experience a hotter version, check out the Smokin’ Marie version, which is also Marie Sharp’s hottest sauce.
